Dan, a backwoods Kentuckian, wants to be a wagon train guide and explore the new land west of the Mississippi.  He spends his time talking to other explorers and anyone who can give him information.  Then he meets James, a rich kid from Pennsylvania who wants the same thing, they partner up to see if they can do it.

Their friendship hits a lot of bumps along the way, but grows as they find they can trust each other.  Their talents compliment each other's until they become best friends and are inseparable.

Their adventures, good and bad, help to open the western part of the country to settlers.  When they get their business going, they are called, "the best guides" and are in great demand.  This book is set in the 1830's and I have used the language as it was originally used, not the modern way it is used today.

Book includes a map of the trails that they take, so that the reader can see where they are, along with some interesting information about the prices back then.

This book is set in the early 1800's when anything west of New York City was an untamed wilderness and only the foolhardy ventured there.
